Volleyball

Volleyball is a two team sport. Each team has six players and are are separated by a high net.

Each team tries to score points against one another by grounding a ball on the other team's court over the net but in compliance with the games rules.

The team who wins the point then serves. The complete rules of volleyball are extensive.

However in summary, points are awarded if: the ball touches the ground outside the court area and/or the ball touches the ground on the opponents’ team’s side of the net.

The first team to reach 25 points wins the set and the first team to win three sets wins the match.

Teams can contact the ball only three times before the ball crosses the net each touch must be by a different player.

The ball is usually played with the hands or arms, but players can push the ball with any part of the body.

Volleyball is usually played indoors but numerous variations of volleyball have developed such as beach volleyball.

Volleyball was first incorporated into the Asian Games in 1958.

Beach volleyball is an Olympic team sport played on sand. Two teams, positioned on either side of a net which divides a rectangular court, hit a volleyball, usually using the hands or arms. Players on each team attempt to hit the ball over the net in such a way that it touches the ground inside the court boundaries, and to prevent the ball from touching the ground on their own side of the court.

Beach volleyball is a popular recreational activity on many beaches around the world, and is generally most popular in areas with wide sandy beaches; however, it is also frequently played on inland sand courts, and has become quite popular in some land-locked countries, notably Switzerland.

Though the official rules call for two players per team, recreational (non-competitive) games often have more players.

Volleyball began in the same place as Basketball – a YMCA gym in Massachusetts, USA. In 1895, four years after James Naismith invented Basketball, his friend William G. Morgan came up with a game he called ‘Mintonette’ – designed as a gentler alternative to Basketball for older members of the gym. Mintonette grew into modern Volleyball, which is anything but gentle, as players leap and smash their way to success in one of the world’s fastest sports. Volleyball was an Asian Games event since 1958 in Tokyo, Japan.
