Tennis

Tennis is a sport played between two players which is known as singles or between two teams of two players known as doubles.

Each player uses a strung racket to strike a hollow rubber ball covered in felt over a net into the opponent's court.

The opponent will try to return the ball; it is allowed to bounce once before it is returned.

If the ball bounces twice then the player who hit the ball before it bounced twice will get the points.

The modern game of tennis originated in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century as "lawn tennis" and had heavy connections to the ancient game of real tennis.

Tennis can be played on grass, clay or other courts either inside or out.

Tennis was first incorporated into the Asian Games in 1958.

List of disciplines

  • Tennis

Tennis was born in the 11th century when a game called ‘Jeu de Paume’ became popular in French monasteries and palaces. The sport developed in England, where croquet lawns were used to stage the first official Lawn Tennis matches. At Athens 1896, the first Olympic Tennis tournament was won by Irish student John Boland. He went to the Games just to watch, but returned an Olympic champion. Compare that to today, when competitors are among the biggest names in world sport, used to playing for millions on the international circuit. Tennis (lawn tennis) is part of the Asian Games program. It has been played at each edition of the games since 1958, with the exception of 1970. Men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles have been contested each time. Men's and women's team events have been contested since 1962.
