Bangkok, Thailand, August 9, 2026: Volleyball icon Kim Yeon-koung received special recognition as an AVC Ambassador, honoring her enduring legacy and remarkable impact on the sport at the 1st Asian Volleyball Confederation Gala Awards Night in Bangkok on Saturday, August 8.
Kim, 38, is a former captain and star spiker of the Korean women’s national volleyball team. She enjoyed a highly successful club career in her home country as well as Japan, Turkey and China.
Despite South Korea finishing fourth at the 2012 London Olympics, losing the bronze medal play-off to Japan at Earls Court, Kim was named Most Valuable Player and Best Scorer after setting the Olympic record for most points (207). This mark topped the previous record of 204 points by Yekaterina Gamova at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Kim retired from the national team in August 2021.
