Nagoya, Japan, October 2, 2026: China’s Wang Xiyu defeated compatriot Zhang Shuai in straight sets to win gold in the women’s singles tennis at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
The victory also gave Wang, 25, an automatic ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Wang swept to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the 37-year-old Zhang in an all-Chinese final on Friday, October 2. Zhang was competing in her fourth Asian Games.
Wang had reached the final by defeating pre-tournament favourite Alex Eala of the Philippines 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-finals on Thursday, October 1.
Eala, ranked No.18 on the WTA Tour, was the highest ranked player in the women’s singles draw at the Asian Games, but let slip the initial advantage and saw her goal of winning gold and securing a berth at LA28 disappear.
The defeat left Eala having to settle for the bronze medal.
