Incheon 2014

The 17th Asian Games will take place over 16 days in Incheon, Korea, from September 19 to October 4, 2014. It will be the third time Korea has hosted the OCA’s showpiece event, following Seoul in 1986 and Pusan in 2002. There will be approximately 20,000 participants, comprised of 13,000 athletes and team officials from the 45 NOCs, and 7,000 media. The slogan is “Diversity Shines Here”.

<p>The emblem design takes the shape of the letter 'A' (for Asia) to project the image of Asians holding each other's hand and soaring together with their wings spread wide. The concept of soaring together towards a bright sun, a symbol of the OCA and Asiad, implies the OCA motto of “Ever Onward” for a bright future.<br /><br />The colours of the emblem, blue and green, each symbolise the international marine city of Incheon and a bright future and hope for Asia.<br /><br />Incheon 2014 organisers are now ready to unveil the mascots and emblem and promote the Incheon Asian Games on the international stage, beginning at the 16th Asian Games set to open in Guangzhou, China, on November 12.</p>

<p>The mascot design has been inspired by the fact that the harbour seals inhabit the waters of Incheon's Baengnyeong Island, which is in the northernmost location of the Republic of Korea, while travelling freely between the two Koreas.<br /> <br />"The mascots represent the idea of the harbour seals playing a role in promoting peace in Asia by contributing to easing the tension on the Korean peninsula and overcoming ideological and religious barriers in some troubled parts of the world," said Dr Lee Yun-taek, President of the IAGOC.<br /> <br />The characters have been named Vichuon, Barame and Chumuro after the Games Main Stadium design motifs of light, wind and dance.</p>

<p>The 2014 Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee (IAGOC) has revealed the design for the medals to be awarded at the 2014 Asian Games, which opens on September 19 next year. Along with the design for the gold, silver, and bronze medals, also revealed were the designs for the award certificate and its case, participation medals, certification of participation and its case, award podium, medal tray, and the winners’ bouquet.<br /><br />The designs are the result of an 8-month work between the IAGOC and a design consortium in Incheon, which went through 4 design evaluations by top designers in the country.  They have received the final approval of the Olympic Council of Asia on August 19.<br /><br />The medal’s motif is a pentagon-shaped symbol, representing the 5 ports of Incheon – Airport, Seaport, Teleport, Leisureport, and Businessport – and holds the emblem of the Incheon Asian Games inside.  It symbolizes the host city of Incheon as the hub of Northeast Asia.<br /><br />The medal’s backside contains the Games’ slogan in Hangul, the Korean alphabet, which was a suggestion by Mr. Song Young-gil, the Mayor of Incheon Metropolitan City.  This is the first time that both Korean and English slogans are written on the medals.<br /><br />The revealing of the medal designs is expected to spur the various publicity and promotional events in the last year of preparations before the opening of the Asian Games one year from now.</p>

<p>The 2014 Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee (IAGOC) revealed the designs for the torch to be used at next year’s Incheon Asian Games. On October 14th, 9 designs were revealed, including those for the torch itself, the torch base, and the torch lamp. The designs are the result of an 8-month work between the IAGOC and a design consortium in Incheon, which went through detailed consultations and evaluations by top designers in the country. <br /><br />They received the final approval of the Olympic Council of Asia on August 5. The design’s motif is the Crane, the official bird of Incheon Metropolitan City.  It describes the crane as it starts to open its wings.  The color of the internal cylinder of the torch is blue, signifying the sky and the ocean of Incheon, and the rest of the torch is of the more subdued gray color, which accentuates the blue.<br /><br />In addition to the blue design, there are 4 other color designs (green, yellow, red, violet) that together represent the 5 regions of Asia – East Asia, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia.</p>
