Sapporo 2017

The Asian Winter Games will return to Japan for the eighth edition in 2017. The first two Asian Winter Games were held in Sapporo in 1986 and 1990, and the third edition at Aomori in 2003.

Sapporo is the picturesque capital of Hokkaido – the most northerly of Japan’s four main islands – and hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1972. The city of Obihiro will share the hosting duties with Sapporo in 2017 by staging the speed skating events.

Organisers plan to hold the 8th AWG 2017 for February 2017, and present five sports: biathlon, curling, ice hockey, skating (figure skating, short track and speed skating) and skiing (alpine, cross country, freestyle, ski jumping and snowboard).

<p>The 8th Sapporo Asian Winter Games Organizing Committee (SAWGOC) has unveiled the Games&rsquo; official mascot.&nbsp;It is inspired by an adorable species of flying squirrel that, in Japan, can only be found in Hokkaido. Hokkaido is the Northernmost of Japan&rsquo;s four main islands, and Sapporo and Obihiro &ndash; the host cities of the 2017 Sapporo Asian Winter Games &ndash; are both located there.<br />&nbsp;<br />Flying around energetically in a red scarf and blue cloak, this little hero will surely help liven up the 2017 Sapporo Asian Winter Games. SAWGOC is currently inviting the public to give it a name.</p>
Mascot
<p>The overall form of the logo represents Hokkaido - the northernmost of Japan's four main islands - as a whole. It also has design elements echoing the North Star shining in the night sky, a snow crystal and the winter breeze. The blue of the outer arcs symbolizes the chill of winter, while the bright sun (the symbol of the OCA) represents the fiery passion with which the Games will be contested regardless of the bracing winter conditions.<br /><br />The five blue arcs represent the five sports of the Games (skiing, skating, ice hockey, curling and biathlon), and are inspired by the speed and energy with which the athletes will compete. The arcs also hold extra significance, representing the people from the five zones of Asia (West, Central, South, South East and East) who will assemble in the host cities of Sapporo and Obihiro and work together to ensure the success of the Games.<br /><br />Although the arcs seem to gravitate toward the centre, they can also be viewed as spreading outward, representing our hopes that the influence of this winter sporting event will develop and spread with Hokkaido as a base.</p>
