Kangwon 1999

The 4th Asian Winter Games were held from January 30 to February 6, 1999 in the mountainous northern province of Kangwon, South Korea.

The sites for the events were Yongpyeong, Chuncheon and Gangneung. Skiing events were successfully staged despite the record low snowfall being experienced by the region.

<p>The traditional symbol of Korea, "tae-guek", was used as basis for designing the emblem of the 4th Asian Winter Games.<br /><br />In addition to "tae-guek", the emblem also blends wave to represent the Sunrising Over the East Sea, snowflake to add a touch of winter and the sun to symbolize the Asian Games. The emblem is an expression of our hope that the 4th Asian Winter Games in Kangwon Province will promote harmony among Asian and contribute to "Ever Onward" progress in Asia.</p>

<p>The torch was designed by the Korea Mint Corporation at free of charge and produced by Korea Explosive Co., Ltd. The protrudent band at the upper part of the torch symbolized meeting and harmony while the design on the lower part expressed the images of mountain and ski.<br /><br />The mobile cauldron was designed by Prof. Seung Dae PARK of Kangwon Provincial junior College. The triangular shaped cauldron represented mountains, plain and the sea of Kangwon Province while the overall shape and color of the mobile cauldron expressed new challenge and the clean natural environment of the region.<br /><br />In addition, the uniforms for the torchbearers, decorations for the escort vehicles and flags for the events were produced while the safety lamps to preserve the sacred flame were secured.</p>

<p>The KAWGOC commissioned the Korea Mint Corporation to design and manufacture a total of 345 medals for the winners, including the medals awarded to the first, second and third place athletes and additional medals for reserves.<br /><br />The obverse side of the medal showed Mt. Sorak, a mountain representing the host province, as a background in harmony with the Games emblem. The reverse side of the medal showed the Games mascot, Gomdori, at the center to represent the 4th Asian Winter Games. The medals were 60mm in diameter, 5.4mm in thickness and weighed 140g. The gold and the silver medals contained 92.5% of silver and 7.5% in bronze, in which the gold medal was gilded with 1.5mm.</p>

<p>A half-moon black bear cub, which is the symbolic animal of Kangwon Province, was given human features to welcome the 4th Asian Winter Games with open arms and a friendly smile.<br /><br />To symbolize the "Ever Onward" progress we hope that Asia will make through hosting of the Asian Winter Games, the flame of the torch was substituted with the sun, the symbol of the Asian Games.</p>

<p>The official poster was produced and distributed to create an atmosphere for the successful organization of the Games as well as to publicize the Games. The official poster designed by the Kangwon University industrial design team, beared the combination of the enlarged emblem and a skier to provide an visual image of the Games, and the sun, the symbol of the OCA, and to provide an image of "Ever Onward" progress of Asia.<br /><br />The prize contest for the official poster and the Games slogan were also publicized through newspapers in August of 1996, and a total of 452 entries were submitted. The KAWGOC decided on the official poster and the slogan on March 21, 1997 after screening the submitted entries.</p>
