Nanjing 2013

It is planned to stage the 2nd Asian Youth Games in the historic Chinese city of Nanjing from August 16-24, 2013. Just like in Singapore in 2009, it will be a full-scale dress rehearsal for the International Olympic Committee’s Youth Olympic Games the following year.

Initally, organisers proposed nine sports - athletics, swimming (including diving), 3-on-3 basketball, tennis, judo, fencing, weightlifting, football and table tennis – but the programme is being expanded.

Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, hosted China’s 10th National Games in October 2005, so the infrastructure is already in place.

<div> <p>The Emblem of the 2nd Asian Youth Games depicts four representative elements of the City of of Nanjing:mountains, rivers, city walls and tree leaves as well as the &ldquo;Red Sun&rdquo; logo of the Olympic Council of Asia.<br /><br />Thecomposition of the Emblem, painted in Chinese calligraphy, is a vivid representation of an athlete and inthe form of the Chinese character &ldquo;Ning&rdquo; (abbreviation for the name of Nanjing) in the sunlight. The entireEmblem is bright in colours and is full of motion and energy.</p> </div> <div>&nbsp;</div>

<div> <p>The Official Games Mascot, named &ldquo;AYG Yuan Yuan&rdquo; in Chinese is derived from the &ldquo;dawn monkey of China&rdquo;The species was first discovered in a remote area of Jiangsu and was one of the first known primates. The design of the mascot was inspired by the &ldquo;Red Sun&rdquo; logo of the Olympic Council of Asia.<br /><br />Rounded lines areapplied to form the monkey&rsquo;s face and its tail is delineated with the patterns of rain flower stones (a speciallocal product also known as Riverstone or Yuhua stone).<br /><br />The Mascot is passionate and uniquely combines theheritage of the city, the vitues of the Games and the vibrancy of youth.It also reflects the Nanjing citizens&rsquo; hopes for the Games and the warm welcome they extend to all friends andguests from Asian countries and regions.</p> </div> <div>&nbsp;</div>
