Cycling

Bicycle racing or cycling, an internationally popular sport conducted on closed courses or the open road.

Bicycle racing includes road bicycle racing, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing, track cycling, BMX racing and bike trials. As the bicycle evolved its various forms, different racing formats developed.

Road races may involve both team and individual competition, and are contested in various ways. They range from the one-day road race to multi-stage events.

Indoor Track racing takes place at a velodrome, usually a banked 1,093.6 ft (333 km) oval.

medals are awarded in individual and team track events, including the sprint, which features a duel between two finalists.

Another track event is the pursuit, in which racers begin at opposite sides of the circuit and attempt to catch each other.

Outdoor road races are gruelling multiday races, especially the Tour de France 4,000 km in more than twenty daily stages.

Tour de France cyclists ride for teams that share prize money and employ various strategies to aid each other, but an individual winner emerges from both time trials and races over varied terrain Another outdoor race is mountain biking, featuring varied off-road events such as cross-country, hill climb and slalom.

Cycling was first incorporated into the Asian Games in 1951.

Artistic Cycling are perforemed indoors with competitors performing tricks on special bikes for points in front of judges. It is perfomed in the form of Balet or Gymnastic on a 6minute time in the singles, pairs, four or six man teams.

The circle ring where the competitors performs has a dimension of 9 x 12 meters to 11 x 14 meters and the outside edge line of 0.5, 4 and 8 meters four half meter hashes extend radially from the center circle, an area of two meters must be cleared of immovable objects around the perimeter.

On the road there are two events: Road Racing and Time Trial. The Road Race is 239km (150 miles) for men and 120km (75 miles) for women. The competitors all start together and the first past the line is the winner. The Time Trial is against the clock over a shorter distance: riders start 90 seconds apart and whoever completes the course fastest wins.

In the Velodrome, Track riders race anti-clockwise round a banked, 250m (273yd) indoor track. There are a number of different events and distances that test speed, endurance and team work. Races are contested both individually, against the clock, and head to head.
