Karate

Karate or karate-do is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands from indigenous fighting methods and Chinese kenp.

It is primarily a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands and ridge-hands. Grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are taught in some styles.

Karate or Karate-do was first incorporated into the Asian Games in 1994.

Karate is all about kicks, punches and strikes. Known all over the world as a major self-defense technique, Karate is practiced all over the world at a highly professional level. Multi-sports events like the Asian Games witness stiff competition in this field.

Meaning 'way of the empty hand' in Japanese, Karate has become an integral part of Japan's culture.

The most popular martial art forms, Karate relies on the use of the unarmed body for attack and counter-attack.

Karate requires mental discipline, agility, quick reflexes and coordinated muscular movements. At a competitive level, Karate players need to control their movements in order to avoid injuries.

Any movement - punches, kicks or blows - are not supposed to reach the opponent. At the Doha Asian Games 2006, Karate competitions will consist of basic defense and attacking routines.

Asian Games history states that Karate was included as a competitive sport from the 11th edition at Beijing in 1990.
