Hong Kong 2009

The 5th East Asian Games held in Tseung Kwan O New Town, Hong Kong at 2009. Twenty-one sports will be contended: swimming, athletics, table tennis, cycling, squash, rowing, badminton, windsurfing, wushu, bowing, football, hockey, volleyball, tennis, aerobics, shooting, basketball, weightlifting, billiards, judo and taekwondo. In addition two trial events are running in the competition: Rugby Sevens and Dance Sport.

<p>The five-colour fireworks graphics of the 2009 East Asian Games Emblem make reference to the five Olympic rings, and the sparkling fireworks symbolize the energy of athletes striving to fulfil their potential and to achieve sporting excellence.<br /><br />The design embraces the spirit of the 2009 East Asian Games, which advocates solidarity, harmony, friendship, the realization of potential and the building of a better and peaceful world.<br /><br />The "Fireworks" also bring home the unique characteristics of Hong Kong as Asia's world city - its vibrancy, freedom, progressiveness and prosperity.</p>

<p>“Dony” and “Ami” are the mascots for the 2009 East Asian Games – the first and largest-scale international multi-sport games in Hong Kong’s history. Fire and lion are the creative elements for the design. Fire has many different forms; it radiates light and heat, representing the flexibility of Hong Kong people. Lion, on the other hand, is the symbol for strength and confidence. Below the Lion Rock, Hong Kong people nurtured a mutually helping and continuously striving spirit.<br /><br />The hair of “Dony” and “Ami” symbolizes fire and their faces radiate the confidence of a lion, which reflects the mutual helping of “Below the Lion Rock” spirit and the ever-changing characteristic of fire. The pattern on their bodies is “fireworks” that echoes the current emblem and exhibits the colours of the five Olympic rings. Not only do they represent people of different races gathering in Hong Kong, they also represent the cohesive force which brings people of Hong Kong to participate in the Games, as well as the sportsmanship which is carried forward and beyond, that is, to break the barriers between territory and people with sports.<br /><br />This couple of mascots will be ambassadors to welcome representatives from participating regions and tourists from around the world who will take part in this important sporting event, the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games.</p>

<p><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;">The torch is a curvy cylinder, with a square top and a round bottom. Its shape resembles the horn of an ox, which leads people to note that the 5th EAG are held in 2009, the Year of the Ox.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;" /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;">The torch can be divided into the upper and lower sections, with two English letters, "e" and "a", embossed in its middle. The letters represent "East" and "Asia" respectively, which form the title of the Games. They create the patterns of "Lucky Clouds" to put forward the concept of yin merging with yang. They also convey the message that Hong Kong is a place where the Chinese and Western cultures meet.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;" /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;">The firework emblem of the Games is repeatedly engraved on the upper section of the torch, creating tiny holes of incised rice patterns. Apart from highlighting the image of the Games, this design also allows the essential circulation of oxygen required for the lighting of the flame.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;" /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; text-align: justify;">Looking from the above, the top of the torch forms the Chinese character (Asia), while its bottom is inscribed with patterns inspired by the English letter "e". The whole torch is painted in stylish muted silver, while both sides facing the top and the bottom are coated in red, which is full of oriental glamour. The combination displays an integration of traditional Chinese cultural essence and elements of modern design.</span></p>
