Philippines’ Mikee Cojuangco Jaworski elected to IOC Executive Board

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 17, 2020: The 136th IOC Session on Friday, July 17 elected John Coates (Australia) and Ng Ser Miang (Singapore) as Vice Presidents and Mikee Cojuangco Jaworski (Philippines) and Gerardo Werthein (Argentina) as members of the Executive Board.

The Session, which was held by video conference for the first time, also elected five new IOC Members following the proposal of the IOC Executive Board on June 10. This brings the total of IOC Members to 104.

John Coates and Ng Ser Miang will replace Professor Uğur Erdener and Juan Antonio Samaranch as Vice Presidents.

Mikee Cojuangco Jaworski, 2002 Busan Asian Games equestrian champion, and Gerardo Werthein will replace Sergey Bubka, whose  eight-year term on the Executive Board came to an end, and Ng Ser Miang, whose four-year term came to an end and who was elected Vice President. 

With this election, female representation on the EB has grown to 33.3 per cent. 

The newly elected IOC Members include four Individual Members and one Member whose election is linked to a function within an International Federation (IF).

Mrs Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović (Female, 1968, Croatia)

Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud (Female, 1975, Saudi Arabia)

Mr Battushig Batbold (Male, 1986, Mongolia)

MEMBER LINKED TO A FUNCTION WITHIN AN IF:

Mr Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics (Male, 1956, Great Britain).

With 39 women on board – representing 37.5 per cent of its membership versus 21.3 per cent in 2013 – the Session has demonstrated the IOC’s commitment to promoting gender equality within its leadership.

In other news, Li Lingwei (China) was among three IOC Members re-elected for an additional eight years and Yu Zaiqing (China), whose term of office was expected to end in December 2021 due to his reaching the age limit, had his term extended until the end of 2025.
