New Delhi, India, July 17, 2020: A 34-strong core group of Indian shooters aiming to take part at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will go into a national camp from August 1.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) announced the decision on Thursday, July 16, following a meeting of the governing body. The camp will be held at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi.
Indian shooters have achieved Olympic quotas in men’s events - 10 metre air rifle, 50m rifle 3 positions, 10m air pistol and skeet - in women’s events - 10m air rifle, 50m rifle 3 positions, 10m air pistol and 25m pistol - and in mixed events, 10m air rifle team and 10m air pistol team.
The NRAI will ensure all necessary coordination and support to ensure the smooth resumption of national shooting activities in keeping with the guidelines of the Indian Government and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
“While the shooting range in New Delhi was made available a week back, given the varying situations across the country and the recent unfortunate spurt in COVID-19 cases in New Delhi, it required meticulous planning to ensure strict and sterile conditions,” said NRAI President Raninder Singh.
“The health and safety of the athletes and coaches are paramount, and we cannot afford any loose ends. We are fully prepared to resume a cautious and phased recommencement of national shooting activities from next month,” Singh added.
All athletes, officials, coaches and support staff shall be segregated and kept under strict quarantine conditions. They will initially be required to submit a valid and recent COVID-19 test result from their home locations, and only then will they be allowed to join the camp.
Attendance will be compulsory for this camp.
