Colombo, Sri Lanka, July 3, 2020: Sri Lankan Olympians living in the country were felicitated on Thursday, July 2, at the Duncan White Auditorium of the Sports Ministry in Colombo.

A group of 47 Olympians were presented with a medical and personal accident insurance cover through the courtesy of Allianz Insurance Lanka Ltd.

The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding at a formal ceremony held under the auspices of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, Dullas Alahapperuma.

“I would like to commend Allianz Lanka and Sri Lanka Olympians for coming together in support of our Olympic stars. Initiatives such as this will go hand in hand with the Government’s programme for our athletes. Let us all stand united behind our sporting heroes as they strive to bring greater glory to the nation,” Alahapperuma said.

“At Sri Lanka Olympians, one of our primary goals is to unite Sri Lanka’s Olympians, represent them and serve their needs. Providing financial assistance to our Olympians during their hour of need is sure to prove invaluable to these heroes who are the pride of the nation,” said Sri Lanka Olympians President Sriyani Kulawansa.

From the 1948 to the 2016 Olympics, 96 athletes have represented Sri Lanka. Former Olympic boxer Sumith Liyanage, 84, was the oldest Olympian who took part in the ceremony.
