Phnom Penh, Cambodia, July 3, 2020: The CEO of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games Cambodia 2023, Vath Chamroeun, provided an update to the government on Thursday, July 2 on behalf of the organising committee CAMSOC.

The 32nd SEA Games for the 11 National Olympic Committees in the region will take place from May 5-17, 2023.

Although Cambodia was a founding member of the inaugural event, which was then known as the Southeast Asia Peninsula (SEAP) Games, in 1959, this will be the first time for the Kingdom to host the SEA Games.

CEO Vath reported that the Main Stadium of the National Morodok Techo Sports Complex - the hub of the Cambodia SEA Games on the outskirts of the capital Phnom Penh - is expected to be completed this year. The Main Stadium for football and athletics has a capacity of 60,000.

Within the complex, the 3,000-capacity aquatic centre, the 5,500-capacity multi-sports gymnasium and a training hall have all been completed. Work on the Athletes’ Village, which will have a capacity of 7,000, will begin this year.

He also introduced a timeline with the main priorities in each year. In 2020, this is the completion of the National Morodok Techo Sports Complex; in 2021 the flag handover from the Hanoi SEA Games and the confirmation of the sports programme; and in 2022 the 4th National Games as a test event followed by pre-SEA Games competitions.

A total of 41 sports are under consideration, comprised of the two mandatory sports of athletics and aquatics, 29 Olympic Games or Asian Games sports and another 10 more regional sports.

The 32nd SEA Games will be held in five locations: Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep.
