SF&OC opens new chapter in coach development in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, China, October 21, 2026: The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, in collaboration with the HKCT Institution of Higher Education, has launched a new coach accreditation programme and qualification validation scheme.

This initiative extends to all 85 local National Sports Associations, significantly broadening the scope of professional coach training and marking a new milestone in the professionalization of Hong Kong’s coaching industry.

In recent years, the government has been committed to promoting sports development by proactively adopting the five-pronged approach:

*Promoting sport in the community

*Supporting elite sports

*Maintaining Hong Kong as a centre for major international sports events

*Enhancing professionalism

*Developing sport as an industry.

SF&OC officially took over the functions of the Hong Kong Coaching Committee in April this year, overseeing matters relating to coach registration, accreditation, continuing education and qualification validation. SF&OC has been actively exploring the establishment of a unified coach accreditation system.

Building on Hong Kong’s solid foundation in coaching development, SF&OC will further strengthen the training system, refine the qualification framework and echo the policy objective of advancing professionalism.

The three-tier progressive accreditation system incorporates:

*Introductory Sports Coaching Course

*Certificate in Foundation Sports Coaching Theory

*Certificate in Advanced Sports Coaching Theory.

To support NSAs in systematically developing their coaching teams, SF&OC has invited all 85 NSAs to nominate eligible registered coaches for priority enrollment. This mechanism ensures that coaches across diverse sports disciplines, from grassroots to elite levels, benefit from early access to the new accreditation programmes.
