All roads lead to Rumesh Tharanga in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sri Lanka, October 15, 2026: Even the roads are paved with gold for Sri Lanka’s javelin star Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage.

On Tuesday, October 13, local government officials in Millaniya, Kalutara District, approved plans to build a new carpeted road leading to the residence of Sri Lanka’s gold medallist at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

The announcement was made by the chairman of the Millaniya Pradeshiya Sabha - a rural council representing the lowest level of local government - at the monthly meeting, and it was suggested that the new road be named "Javelin Throw Champion Rumesh Tharanga" in recognition of his sporting achievements.

The suggestion was unanimously adopted with council members calling for the road to be developed to a high standard with asphalt carpeting.

The road, which is estimated to cost Rs.8 million (US$24,200), will improve access to the athlete's residence.

Rumesh Tharanga, 23, has dominated the world of javelin in 2026. The reigning world No.1 has won gold medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, won five Diamond League events and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship. His personal best of 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League is the best throw this year.
