Nagoya, Japan, September 24, 2026: Alexey Lutsenko powered his way to victory in the men’s road cycling race to become the most successful Kazakhstani athlete in the history of the Asian Games in terms of gold medals won.
Lutsenko clinched his sixth Asian Games gold medal, winning the men’s 160.5km road race on Wednesday, September 23, in four hours 13 minutes and 11 seconds.
Soon after winning, Lutsenko announced he was retiring from an illustrious 15-year career.
His Asian Games gold medal haul includes one gold from Incheon 2014, two golds from Jakarta 2018, one gold and one silver from Hangzhou 2022 and two golds from Aichi-Nagoya – having won the individual time trial on September 20.
The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan thanked the 34-year-old captain of the national road cycling team posting: “Alexey, thank you for everything. You have left an indelible mark in the history of cycling in Kazakhstan. Your name and achievements will be remembered by the people.”
Before Lutsenko created history, the national record belonged to canoeist Konstantin Negodyayev, who won five gold medals at the Asian Games in Hiroshima and Bangkok.
