Colombo, Sri Lanka, June 8, 2020: The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka began a ‘Plant a Tree’ campaign last Friday, June 5, to mark Olympic Day 2020 which falls on June 23.
In a move to promote a green environment, the Sri Lanka NOC has asked people to take a picture of themselves planting a tree and send it to the NOC to celebrate Olympic Day.
“Plant a tree for a new lease of life” #UnitedbyEnvironment urged the NOC. “The purpose of planting a tree is to remember the interconnection of the environment. The trees play a greater role for our athletes to breathe clean air not only during training but throughout life.”
The campaign, which will run until June 23, has already seen many local athletes getting involved including South Asian Games silver medallist in taekwondo Kumari Mahdula and archers Sajeev de Silva and Ravien Dalpatadu who posted pictures of themselves planting a tree on the NOC Facebook page.
This year Olympic Day celebrations in Colombo will go online due to the COVID-19 situation. Last week the NOC called for social media buffs to apply to become Social Media Ambassadors, one in each of the 25 districts of the island, so as to promote Olympism throughout the country.
