Nagoya, Japan, September 21, 2026: Saudi karateka Dina Mustafa made history at the 20th Asian Games on Sunday, September 20, capturing a bronze medal to become the first Saudi female athlete ever to medal in the history of the Kingdom’s participation at the Asian Games.
Mustafa secured the milestone in the women’s kumite competition at Toyohashi City General Gymnasium following a hard fought 8–7 victory over Nepal’s Erika Gurung in their bronze medal bout.
"I’m happy to be the first Saudi woman to win a medal," Mustafa said after the podium ceremony. "This bronze medal feels like gold to me. From my very first day in Nagoya, I said that I would win a medal."
The victory came against formidable continental opposition: Gurung had entered Nagoya as the reigning Asian Games silver medalist, having reached the final in Hangzhou.
The medal opened a landmark day for the Saudi delegation in Nagoya. Mustafa’s podium finish provided Saudi Arabia with its first medal of the 2026 Games.
Team Saudi celebrated the achievement across official channels, calling it "the first historic medal for the Kingdom's ladies" and hailing Mustafa’s breakthrough as a transformative moment for women’s combat sports in the country.
