Speed climber Amir Maimuratov reaches for the top
Amir Maimuratov started sport climbing at the age of 12 in Astana – initially to cure his fear of heights.
Quickly it became his passion, his profession and his life and he specialized in speed climbing – the Spiderman-style dash up the wall to touch the top.
His hard work and dedication earned him a place on Team Kazakhstan at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games where he finished fifth in men’s speed climbing.
“For me, sport climbing is not only about speed and physical strength. It is also about constant self-improvement, concentration, discipline and the ability to control nervousness under pressure,” he said.
“I continue to train and set new goals in order to represent Kazakhstan with pride at major international competitions and achieve new sporting successes.”
Amir has competed in two Asian Games – Jakarta-Palembang 2018 and Hangzhou 2022 – and will complete his hat-trick in Aichi-Nagoya, where he will also be hoping to win enough votes from his fellow athletes in order to be elected a member for Central Asia of the OCA AC.
“My sporting career has taught me discipline, responsibility, resilience and the importance of teamwork,” he said.
“Starting sport climbing at the age of 12, I have spent many years working toward the highest level of competition.
“I understand what it means to set long-term goals, overcome setbacks, adapt to different circumstances and continue working when results do not come immediately.”
Amir says that, by competing internationally, he has met athletes from many different countries, cultures and sporting backgrounds.
“I believe this experience would help me communicate effectively with athletes from across Asia and understand different perspectives,” he added.
“I also bring experience from competing at major multi-sport events. Taking part in the Asian Games and the Olympic Games has helped me understand the importance of athlete services, organisation, fair competition and communication.”
