Thimphu, Bhutan, September 9, 2026: A World Aquatics Discover Water training programme was held at the Thimphu Aquatics Centre from September 1-4, strengthening local aquatic education and laying the groundwork for a more structured approach to child water safety in Bhutan.
Delivered by the Bhutan Aquatics Federation, with support from World Aquatics, Asia Aquatics and the Bhutan Olympic Committee, the four-day programme brought together 15 participants and was led by South Korean instructor Nari Shin and local Tashi Norbu.
Participants were introduced to the Discover Water approach, which goes beyond swimming technique to support children’s physical, social, psychological and cognitive development, alongside essential water safety and aquatic skills.
Participants engaged in programme theory, lesson planning, safeguarding, assessment, group discussion and practical lessons. As part of the practical component, 30 children aged six to 12 years from Pelkil School participated in demonstration sessions, giving trainee educators the opportunity to apply their learning in a real teaching environment.
Officials from the Bhutan Aquatics Federation and Bhutan Olympic Committee visited the programme and met participants. They underlined the importance of continued investment in aquatic education and water safety.
