Iraq NOC President holds talks with Spanish counterpart on enhancing sports cooperation

Baghdad, Iraq, September 8, 2026: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq, Dr. Aqeel Muften, held a meeting with the President of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blanco, in Madrid on Monday, September 7, to discuss ways to enhance sports cooperation between the two NOCs.

 

The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of Iraq to Spain, Ali Shamran, Iraqi NOC Secretary General Haitham Abdul Hamid and Spanish sports expert Ignasi Fabregas, among other officials.

 

NOC Secretary General Abdul Hamid said the meeting addressed ways to forge sports cooperation, and discussed mechanisms for implementing future programmes that would contribute to the development of Iraqi sports.

 

Abdul Hamid also noted that cooperation between the two NOCs would directly contribute to developing national sports federations in Iraq who will benefit from Spanish expertise and will contribute to raising the capabilities of Iraqi athletes.

 

The meeting also looked at preparations for training camps ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and Brisbane 2032 Olympics. The Iraq NOC Secretary General stressed the importance of developing long-term plans to enable Iraqi athletes to compete and achieve honourable results.
