Doha, Qatar, August 10, 2026: The Qatar Olympic Committee has lauded the latest exploits of Qatari mountaineering legend Sheikha Asma bint Thani Al Thani, who successfully reached the summit of Gasherbrum II, located in the Karakoram mountain range on the border between Pakistan and China.
“Qatari mountaineering legend Sheikha Asma bint Thani Al Thani has successfully summited 11 of the world’s 14 mountains exceeding 8,000 metres, continuing her extraordinary journey towards completing the world’s highest peaks,” the QOC posted.
Her efforts are extraordinary as these peaks rise into what is known as the "Death Zone" where oxygen levels drop dramatically and conditions become extremely dangerous.
The QOC described her achievement as historic for Qatari and Arab women.
