New Delhi, India, August 10, 2026: Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha has described India’s Commonwealth Games performance as a proud moment for the nation, praising the athletes, especially the boxers, for their mental strength and determination.
Usha credited the government’s support and encouragement for the growing success of Indian sport, saying the IOA and the government are working together towards achieving world-class standards.
“It is a proud moment for our country, for every Indian and every boxer who goes and gets the gold medal, and Jana Mana Gana (national anthem) plays,” Usha told the Press Trust of India.
“The boxers have done very well because, even at the last moment, they are not giving up because they are mentally strong. I am so happy that even our track and field athletes also won medals,” she noted.
India won 13 gold medals, 17 silver and nine bronze medals for a total of 39 medals in Glasgow to finish fourth in the overall standings. Boxing contributed largely to this success with India winning seven gold and three silver medals on the same day in an unprecedented achievement in the history of the CWG.
Usha acknowledged the backing of the Government. “Our Prime Minister himself is supporting sports. He motivates the players, after the events he invites players to his house. The government and the IOA are on the same page, and that is why performances are good. I hope we will reach a world-class level very soon,” Usha added.
India’s next major multi-sports international outing will be at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games from September 19 to October 4 where the country’s athletes will face a sterner test.
