Glasgow, Scotland, August 1, 2026: Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won Sri Lanka’s first ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in javelin on Friday, July 31, beating a stacked field of Olympic medallists to claim the title at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.
Former fast bowler Pathirage secured the win with a throw of 89.75m to finish ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra of India, 85.83m. Yash Vir Singh, also of India, claimed bronze with a throw of 85.41m.
Paris 2024 bronze medallist Anderson Peters of Grenada finished fourth with 83.88m while the showdown with reigning Olympic champion, Arshad Nadeem, failed to materialise as the Pakistan athlete finished ninth (77.41m).
Pathirage’s success marked the first gold medal won by a Sri Lankan athlete at the Commonwealth Games since weightlifter Chinthana Vidanage topped the podium at the 2006 Melbourne Games.
“I’m incredibly happy to bring the first javelin gold medal to Sri Lanka,” he told reporters in the mixed zone.
“Bringing this gold medal means everything to me and I’m proud to hear our national anthem played as I stood on the podium for Sri Lanka,” Pathirage, an Olympic Scholarship holder, said.
“To be very honest, the weather conditions were very tough for us,” Pathirage described competing inside the windy stadium. “But I tried to throw my own distance instead of trying to match other people’s distances.”
His next target will be a podium finish at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in September-October, 2026, before setting his sights on Olympic gold at LA28.
Sri Lanka lies in 14th place in the overall medal standings with one gold and one silver.
*India added another two gold medals to its tally with Asmita Dey (women’s 48kg) and Harsh Singh (men’s 60kg) winning their respective categories in judo.
Tejaswin Shankar also created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win a medal in decathlon, a bronze.
India lies in 10th place overall in the standings with five gold, 12 silvers and six bronze for a total of 23.
