Harbin, China, August 1, 2026: As Malaysia’s first Olympian in men’s figure skating, Julian Yee knows what it takes to reach the top.
Now the head coach at the OCA-ISU Asian Youth Figure Skating Camp at Harbin, Julian, 29, is passing on his knowledge to the new generation.
“The key objectives and contents of the camp are to bring the skaters together, teach them many different perspectives and techniques and, hopefully, help them improve in the future,” said the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympian.
Regarding the heavy focus on jumps at the camp, Julian added: “We made sure that every day we had jump sessions because we understand that there are a lot of difficulties with certain skaters in their development in the jumps.
“We wanted to make sure that we're able to share as much information as we can to help them improve.
“We're hoping that, with the techniques and the exercises we provide the skaters for their jumps, they will be able to practice it more when they go back home and, hopefully, make the jumps a little bit more consistent and also help the quality of the jumps to get a better score at competitions.”
The two-time Southeast Asian Games men’s singles champion concluded: “I would really hope for all the skaters and coaches of the camp to make as many friends as they can, learn as much as they can as well and continue building on all of this when they go back.
“Building connections, making new friends and creating memories is very important, so I hope they enjoy these experiences.”
The OCA-ISU camp closes August 3.
