Glasgow, Scotland, July 30, 2026: Sri Lanka clinched its first medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with Palitha Bandara winning silver in the men’s discus F42-44/F61-64 para athletics final on Wednesday, July 29.
Bandara delivered a strong performance, throwing the discus 46.84 metres to achieve a personal best and secure the silver medal.
It was the second consecutive Commonwealth Games medal for the Sri Lanka Army athlete in the event, having also finished second at the Birmingham 2022 Games.
Malaysia, meanwhile, surpassed their pre-Games target of five gold medals on the sixth day of the Glasgow Games after weightlifter Mohamad Syahmi Nor Ghazali delivered the country’s sixth gold in the men’s 94kg with a combined lift of 347kg. It was Malaysia's fifth gold in weightlifting.
Malaysia have now collected 11 medals - six gold, two silver and three bronze - to lie seventh in the overall standings.
Dilip Mahadu Gavit and Mohammed Basil finished 1-2 in the men’s 100m T47 final to give India the gold and silver medal. It was India’s third gold of the Games.
Sreeshankar Murali also grabbed the spotlight for India with an effort of 8.09m winning silver in the men’s long jump behind former Olympic champion Tajay Gayle of Jamaica, who won gold with a leap of 8.15m.
India lies eighth in the overall standings with three gold medals, nine silvers and three bronze for a total of 15 medals. The country is assured of adding more medals to the tally with six boxers reaching the semi-finals of their respective events, ensuring at least a bronze for each.
Para-swimmer Toh Wei Soong clinched Singapore’s second medal in Glasgow with a silver in the men’s 50m freestyle S7 final on Wednesday.
