Glasgow, Scotland, July 29, 2026: Teenager Amanda Yap clinched Singapore’s first medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games after a sensational performance in the women’s balance beam final on Tuesday, July 28.
Amanda, 16, who was making her Games debut, registered a score of 13.233 to take silver behind Australia’s Breanna Scott (13.933) at The Arena in Glasgow. Canada’s Lia-Monica Fontaine finished in third place.
In doing so, Amanda equalled Singapore’s best finish in gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games, with Lim Heem Wei also taking balance beam silver at the 2010 edition.
“It’s a great honour being able to win a medal for your country,” a joyous Amanda said after her triumph.
“It makes me really happy and I hope it inspires others. I’m really thankful to my teammates and my coaches. This definitely shows anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it.”
Malaysia, meanwhile, continued its strong momentum as it met its five gold medal target to move up the overall standings into sixth place.
Weightlifter Hafizuddin Roslin secured Malaysia's fourth gold medal on Tuesday in the men’s 88kg category. The 22-year-old managed a combined lift of 345kg – 162kg in the snatch and 183kg in the clean and jerk. The snatch and total were both new Games records in his Commonwealth Games debut.
Para long jump T20 world record holder Abdul Latif Romly delivered Malaysia’s fifth gold, winning on his third jump of 7.17 metres in rainy and cold conditions at Scotstoun Stadium. Compatriot Eljoe Gotuoh won the bronze with a jump of 6.51m.
Malaysia also secured two silvers on Tuesday, courtesy of lawn bowlers Aleena Ahmad Nawawi and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman in the women’s pairs and Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in the men’s singles.
Malaysia has now won 10 medals – five gold, two silver and three bronze – in Glasgow.
India won a second athletics medal in Glasgow when Gulveer Singh scripted history becoming the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the men’s 10,000m - a silver.
The reigning Asian champion clocked 27 minutes 49.78 seconds to finish behind Australia’s Ky Robinson (27:48.93). David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man claimed bronze in 27:50.28.
Sarvesh Kumar had won India’s first athletics medal in Glasgow after claiming silver in the men’s high jump.
Weightlifter Hajinder Kaur also won a silver medal in the women’s 69kg category to take India’s overall medal tally to 12 at day’s end on Tuesday – two gold, seven silver and three bronze.
India are placed ninth in the medal standings.
