Glasgow, Scotland, July 27, 2026: Weightlifters from Malaysia and India lifted their countries to their first gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday, July 26.
Mohd Aznil Bidin set three Games records to win the men’s 65kg gold medal and in the process become the first Malaysian athlete to win gold at three consecutive Commonwealth Games. He had previously topped the podium in the men’s 62kg at Gold Coast 2018 and successfully defended his crown in Birmingham in 2022.
Aznil lifted 133kg in the snatch before clearing 166kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 299kg – records in all three disciplines.
"I have won three times and this win inspires me to try and win it for a fourth time," said the 32-year-old Anzil. "When I do well at the Commonwealth Games, it gives me more motivation to chase my ultimate goal, which is qualifying for the Olympics."
It was Malaysia’s second gold in Glasgow after teammate Mohd Aniq Kasdan triumphed in the men’s 60kg earlier on Sunday.
"I'm very happy because this was my target this year," said Aniq, who broke out in dance and grooved his way off the stage into his coaches' waiting arms.
Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu gave India its first gold medal of the Games by winning the women’s 48kg final to complete an enviable treble, having also bagged golds at the two previous CWG editions.
“A lot was going on in my mind – whether I would be able to win the medal this time. I am relieved and very happy that I was able to get my third gold for India,” said Mirabai, silver medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
India won two more weightlifting medals – two silvers for Rishikanta Singh and Mathupandi Raja in the men’s 60kg and 65kg, respectively.
India has now won four medals overall - a gold, two silvers and a bronze.
Malaysia’s medal haul was further boosted by Irene Jane Henry, who claimed bronze on her Commonwealth Games debut in the women’s 48kg.
Malaysia has now won two gold medals and two bronze medals in Glasgow.
