Thimphu, Bhutan, July 15, 2026: A special prayer ceremony was held at Simtokha Dzong in Thimphu in memory of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Amir of the State of Qatar, in recognition of his remarkable legacy and enduring contributions to the development of sport and the Olympic Movement.
HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, graced the ceremony and offered prayers by lighting butter lamps in honour of the late Amir.
The prayer ceremony was attended by leaders of National Sports Federations and staff of the BOC who gathered to pay their respects and offer prayers in remembrance of His Highness.
The BOC, its Executive Committee, National Sports Federations, athletes, coaches, officials and the entire BOC family extended its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar and Member of the IOC; HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the OCA; the esteemed Al Thani family; the people of Qatar; and all those whose lives were touched by HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
