Girls don’t cry – especially in women’s wrestling

Guangzhou, China, July 14, 2026: As the sweat-soaked T-shirt of local teenager Jiang Yingxin proudly proclaims: “Girls Don’t Cry” – especially in wrestling, they don’t.

Jiang, 15, is one of 40 wrestling students from the Guangzhou Polytechnic of Sports attending the OCA-UWW Asian Wrestling Youth Camp and Course for Coaches along with 62 athletes and 30 coaches from 30 National Olympic Committees.

She has been wrestling for three years because, she says, she found the sport interesting.

Of the colourful motivational message “Girls Don’t Cry” emblazoned across her black T-shirt, she adds: “My mother bought it for me. I find it very inspiring.”

Judging by the regular occasions that the young athletes are sent crashing to the mat in the course of a two-hour training session, it’s going to take a lot more than that for these rugged wrestling girls to cry.
