Bahrain basketball star Muzamil Ameer in historic pick by NBA G League

Manama, Bahrain, July 5, 2026: The Bahrain Olympic Committee has hailed the historic achievement of Muzamil Ameer, who became the first Bahraini basketball player, and the first from the Gulf countries, to be selected in the 2026 NBA G League International Player Draft.

 

Ameer, 24, was selected eighth overall by the San Diego Clippers before being immediately traded to the Texas Legends, the NBA G League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks.

 

He was one of 20 rising talents from around the world selected as part of the 2026-2027 NBA G League Draft which took place last Thursday, July 2. 

 

The move represents a landmark achievement for Bahrain, opening new opportunities for the Kingdom’s basketball talent on the international stage.

 

The NBA G League is the NBA's development league and is widely regarded as the main gateway to the NBA.

 

The Bahrain Olympic Committee posted: “The selection of Muzamil Ameer is of great importance that puts Bahrain and Gulf basketball on the map of the world game.

 

“This achievement is an extension of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s approach to investing in youth and nurturing young talent to reach the highest levels. It is an embodiment of a project led by His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Works & Youth Affairs,” the BOC added.
