Iraq NOC celebrates Olympic Day under auspices of President Dr. Aqeel Muften

Baghdad, Iraq, June 15, 2026: The National Olympic Committee of Iraq celebrated Olympic Day 2026 under the auspices of President Dr. Aqeel Muften at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences in Baghdad on Saturday, June 13.

 

Also among the dignitaries attending the event were the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Sabah Qasim, members of the Iraqi NOC Executive Board and presidents of national sports federations.

 

In his welcoming address, Dr. Aqeel Muften emphasised the importance of Olympic Day as a global event that embodies the values of friendship, respect and excellence. He also highlighted the continuing support of athletes and sports associations which he said contributed to the development of the Iraqi Olympic Movement and towards enhancing its presence internationally.

 

The ceremony included a parade of athletes and a number of demonstration sports events that underlined the Olympic Movement’s values and its message of spreading the culture of sport and fostering the spirit of fair competition among the youth.

 

Among the events were a 100 metre running race, a cycle race, taekwondo and acrobatic demonstrations as well as music and art displays that reflected the athletic and cultural diversity that Iraqi sport boasts.

 

The celebrations ended with the symbolic lighting of the Olympic flame, representing peace, coexistence and fair competition among people. Certificates were also distributed to all participants.
