Chinese chess fun day highlights festival of sport in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, China, June 1, 2026: The 69th Festival of Sport organised by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China brought a series of exciting activities to the community in late May.

Two enhanced events - “Battle of the Minds – Chinese Chess Fun Day” and “Family Sports Game 2026” - were held at Tsuen Wan Sports Centre on May 30 and May 31, respectively, drawing large crowds of enthusiastic participants.

Centred around the themes of Chinese chess culture and “sport in everyday life”, the two events featured competitions, interactive games and physical challenges, allowing participants of all ages to immerse themselves in the fun and excitement of sport.

Themed on the rich tradition of the Chinese chess (Xiangqi), the “Battle of the Minds – Chinese Chess Fun Day” offered a series of competitions, demonstrations and interactive experiences that showcased the charm of this traditional mind game.

A special sharing session, “Chess and Life”, featured Guangdong Provincial Team representatives and National Games bronze medallists Chen Xinglin and Zhang Xuechao, who shared their journeys as athletes and insights into chess. The two grandmasters also captivated the audience with simultaneous exhibition matches and blindfold chess performances.

The “Family Sports Game 2026” was held the following day and also attracted a large number of families. Festival Ambassador Hayley Chan (Windsurfing) attended with her son, engaging warmly with participating parents and children at the event.

“I am thrilled to see so many families here,” she said. “Beyond strengthening parent-child bonding, events like this help children develop an interest in sports from an early age. Through challenges, they learn perseverance, which is the true spirit of sport, while creating lasting memories with their parents.”

Upcoming enhanced events are the “Sport for All Fun Day” (28 June) and the “VRC Wave and Aim Summer Festival” (25 July), offering opportunities for people of all ages and interests to experience the joy of sports and interactive experiences together.

The 69th Festival of Sport runs from April to August under the theme “One Line of Energy, A City in Motion”.

More than 50 sports activities are taking place across Hong Kong to promote sport for all, encouraging active community participation and inspiring the public to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of an active lifestyle.
