Malaysian hockey great Nawawi to join Olympic Day celebrations

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 1, 2026: The Olympic Council of Malaysia has announced that Dato’ Mirnawan Nawawi, a Melaka-born Olympian and former national hockey captain, will be joining the Olympic Day Run at the Campus of UTeM (Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka) on Sunday, June 21.

Based on OCM records, Dato’ Mirnawan Nawawi has made tremendous contributions to the Olympic Movement through his participation in all the major multi-sport games under the jurisdiction of the OCM, namely the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games.

Throughout his distinguished sporting career, he represented Malaysia in four SEA Games, three Asian Games, one Commonwealth Games and three Olympic Games.

His achievements have contributed significantly to the success of the Malaysian contingent, winning four gold medals at the SEA Games, a bronze medal at the 11th Asian Games Beijing 1990 and a silver medal at the XVI Commonwealth Games Kuala Lumpur 1998.

In recognition of his outstanding leadership and significant contributions to the Olympic Movement, Dato’ Mirnawan Nawawi was honoured with the distinction of serving as the flag bearer of the Malaysian contingent at the XXVII Olympic Games Sydney 2000.
