New Delhi, India, May 28, 2026: Raja Randhir Singh, India’s first Asian Games shooting gold medallist, was mourned by Abhinav Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold – also in shooting.
Bindra expressed his grief through a heartfelt homage to Randhir Singh, who passed away at the age of 79 on Wednesday, May 27.
“Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Raja Randhir Singh ji. He lived a life devoted to sport as an Olympian, as a sports administrator and as someone who contributed immensely to Indian and World sport,” posted Bindra.
Bindra, who won an Olympic gold at the 2008 Beijing Games, added: “His legacy will remain as an important part of our sporting history. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Randhir Singh created history by winning India’s first-ever shooting gold medal at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok. The journey started by one of the pioneers of shooting in India came to a fairytale ending 30 years later in Beijing when Bindra triumphed.
