Doha, Qatar, May 24, 2026: H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia and President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, honoured Team Qatar athletes and national teams following their historic achievement at the 4thGCC Games Doha 2026 which concluded on Friday, May 22.
Sheikh Joaan celebrated a new generation of champions who led Qatar to the largest medal haul in the history of the GCC Games, securing 134 medals, with 48 gold, 50 silver and 36 bronze medals.
Sheikh Joaan and Qatar’s sporting leadership felicitated Team Qatar on Saturday for the wonderful achievement.
It further confirmed the growing status of Qatari sport, not only in terms of results, but also through its ability to develop a competitive generation of athletes, deliver exceptional organisation, and establish a sporting presence that continues to strengthen across Gulf, continental, and international arenas.
The ceremony was also attended by H.E. Mohammed bin Yousuf Al Mana, First Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee; H.E. Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, QOC Second Vice President; and H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, QOC Secretary General and Vice Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Games, alongside several senior sports officials, federation presidents, and GCC delegations, in addition to Team Qatar athletes and officials.
Outstanding athletes were honoured amid widespread praise for their strong performances which enabled Qatar to impose its dominance on the medal standings by finishing on top.
Qatar led the rankings with 48 gold, followed by Saudi Arabia with 32, Bahrain (25), Kuwait (14), UAE (13) and Oman (10).
The Games, held from May 11 – 22, featured the participation of more than 1,400 athletes and officials competing in 17 sports. It also marked another milestone, confirming Qatar’s capability to organise major sporting events according to the highest international standards.
