Former Sri Lanka NOC Secretary General Prema Pinnewale passes away

Colombo, Sri Lanka, May 14, 2026: The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka has expressed its profound sadness at the passing of former NOC Secretary General Prema Pinnewale.

 

The Sri Lanka NOC posted: “He was a towering figure in Sri Lanka sport. A former Secretary General of the NOC Sri Lanka and Commonwealth Games Association of Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Athletics, as well as a World Athletics Veteran Pin awardee, he dedicated his life to the advancement of sport and the development of future generations of administrators and athletes.”

 

Pinnewale, one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced and influential sports administrators, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, May 12. He was 88.

 

The NOC added: “Respected for his wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment, he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

 

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire sporting fraternity during this time of grief.”

 

Pinnewale was NOC Secretary General from 1983 to 1998. He also served as a member of the Media Committee of the Olympic Council of Asia.
