Philippines ‘proud’ and ‘thrilled’ to receive OCA flag in Sanya

Sanya, China, May 1, 2026: The Philippine Olympic Committee has described the flag handover ceremony for the next Asian Beach Games as a “goosebump moment” in Sanya.

The closing ceremony of the 6th Asian Beach Games on Thursday, April 30 included the OCA flag being passed from Sanya and China to Cebu and the Philippines for the seventh edition in March 2028.

POC President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino received the OCA flag from OCA President His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani and proudly waved the flag to celebrate the handover.

The POC stated: “Proud. Thrilled. Ready for Asia – and the world! Seeing Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino proudly wave the Olympic Council of Asia flag is an absolute goosebump moment.

“This isn't just a flag; it’s a powerful symbol that the Philippines is officially the next host of the Asian Beach Games.

“History is unfolding before our eyes. This marks the very first OCA event to be hosted on our shores since 1954. This momentous return will undoubtedly bring unparalleled exposure and ignite the continuous improvement of our Filipino athletes, not just here in Asia but on the global stage.

“We already have three historic Olympic gold medals under our belt, and it’s continental battlegrounds like the Asian Beach Games that further hone the world-class skills, grit and winning mindset of our homegrown champions.

“The world is watching, and we are ready.”

In the parade of athletes at the closing ceremony, the Philippines entered the arena last – a symbol as the next host of the Asian Beach Games.

There was also a short cultural performance to show the charm and delights of the Philippines and of Cebu.
