OCA signs host city contract with Philippines for 7th Asian Beach Games in 2028

Sanya, China, April 27, 2026: With the Host City Contract officially signed for the 7th Asian Beach Games in Cebu, the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has unveiled its strategic blueprint targeting a March 2028 schedule for the continental showcase.

POC President Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino described the hosting rights as the fulfillment of a long-standing mission to elevate the Philippines' hosting pedigree.

"This is important. It has been a long time since we last hosted an Asian-level event, so this is it," Tolentino declared, emphasizing that the Games will serve as a monumental catalyst for the nation's sports tourism sector alongside the SEA Plus Youth Games in December 2027.

POC Secretary General Atty. Wharton Chan revealed that the Asian Beach Games are strategically scheduled for March 2028, following Ramadan and preceding the Holy Week to maximize tourist influx. The initial sporting framework prioritizes 24 disciplines where Filipinos excel, including team sports, water sports, martial arts and individual sports, pending OCA approval.

Chan acknowledged the significant challenge ahead, noting that 45 National Olympic Committees will participate in what will be a milestone event for the Philippines. However, he expressed confidence in Cebu's infrastructure and the nation's renowned hospitality.

Crucially, Chan confirmed the ultimate ambition behind the bid: "This is already a practice for a possible future hosting of the Asian Games," he stated, noting that an Asian Games return to the Philippines, which last hosted the continent's most prestigious multi-sport event in 1954, is long overdue.

The host city contract was signed at the Conifer Resort in Sanya on the sidelines of the 6th Asian Beach Games on the afternoon of Monday, April 27, between OCA President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani and POC President Tolentino.
