Da Nang sets sights on hosting ABG9

Sanya, China, April 26, 2026: Da Nang is eager to welcome the Asian Beach Games back to its shores following the successful ABG5 in 2016.

In a bid to secure this prestigious event, a delegation from the city, led by Madame Nguyen Thi Anh Thi, Vice Chairwoman of the Da Nang People's Committee, recently met with Mr. Husain Al Musallam, OCA Director General, during the 6th Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China.

During the meeting, Madame Thi congratulated the OCA on the successful opening ceremony of ABG6 and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss Da Nang’s potential role in future games.

She highlighted the city's recent merger with Quang Nam which has resulted in the longest coastline in Vietnam - spanning 250 kilometers - along with favorable environmental and infrastructure conditions ideal for sports and, specifically, water sports.

Da Nang's capability to host international sporting events is evidenced by its successful organization of the ABG5 in 2016 and the upcoming ASEAN Schools Games in 2024. With this track record, Madame Thi reiterated the city’s hope to host the ABG again and committed to collaborating closely with the OCA to fulfill all requirements.

She also extended a warm invitation to the OCA President and Director General for a visit and site inspection.

In response, Mr. Al Musallam praised Da Nang's adept hosting of ABG5 and acknowledged the city's strong potential for future events. He noted several critical factors, such as governmental support, the quality of infrastructure and organizational capabilities, as well as considerations regarding budget, copyright and marketing.

He said that the Philippines and Malaysia were set to host ABG 7 and 8 respectively, suggesting that Da Nang could aim for ABG9 around 2030-2031. The OCA will provide further information for Da Nang to evaluate and present to relevant authorities.

Additionally, discussions touched on the possibility of Da Nang hosting other high-profile international maritime sports events such as the World Water Polo Championship and marathon swimming to further attract both international athletes and tourists.
