Olympic bronze medallist Song takes shot put gold at Sanya 2026

Sanya, China, April 25, 2026: Whether it's synthetic track or coastal sand, class will always shine through.

Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Song Jiayuan of China dominated the Asian Beach Games shot put circle, launching a season’s best 19.15m to secure gold at Phoenix Island on Saturday.

It was a clinical win-from-the-front performance that left the rest of the field competing for the minor medals from the very first round.

Her teammate Zhang Linru locked in silver with an 18.27m on her third attempt, while Chinese Taipei’s Wu Ci-En grabbed bronze with a 16.40m, effectively ending Thailand’s hopes of a podium finish.

For Song, 28, this victory was emotional. It marked her first time clearing the 19-meter barrier in major competition since undergoing surgery last year. While her personal best stands at a formidable 20.38m, this performance signals that the elite power is returning just in time for the larger season ahead.

“I was relaxed and felt good going into an early lead,” Song reflected. “I wanted a big one and finally achieved that on the sixth throw. I’ve proven my competitiveness.”

The gap between the top two and the rest of the field was huge. While the podium finishers were in a league of their own, several competitors failed to breach the 12m mark. With her technical movement, which she would now focus on, Song’s steady rise back toward peak form serves as a loud warning to her rivals across the continent.

Song’s fans would surely hope that the sands of Sanya provided the rehearsal, with the coronation following at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games this September.
