Hang’s late surge secures Vietnam’s first gold at Sanya 2026

Sanya, China, April 24, 2026: In a pulsating contest that highlighted technical grit and the subtle nuances of form, the women’s long jump gave Athletics its first gold medal here at the 6th Asian Beach Games, Sanya.

Trailing until the final round, Ha Thi Thuy Hang uncorked a 6.16m leap - a massive moment not just for her but for Vietnam, clinching their first gold of these Games.

Sri Lanka’s duo of Wikramasinha Arachchi (5.87m) and ISL Galabadage (5.83m) finished with silver and bronze.

Across the first three rounds, Hang’s form seemed patchy; two fouls and a 5.73m suggested she was pushing too hard. But therein lies the truth of the long jump: you can play it conservative and hope for a medal, or you push to the limits and go maximum on the take-off board. Her fourth jump of 5.43m remained below par. At this point, Arachchi produced the morning’s best effort of 5.87m, moving into the lead to the cheers of the Lankan supporters. Gold loomed on the horizon for Sri Lanka.

The momentum shifted in the fifth round. Hang reclaimed the lead with a 5.94m, while the Lankan jumper fouled. Then, in her final attempt, Hang truly found her mark with that 6.16m. The Lankan camp was left dismayed; under the mounting pressure, Arachchi succumbed, managing only a 5.79m effort with her final jump.

In technical events like the long jump and triple jump, most athletes tighten up in the end jumps. For Hang to find her peak at the ultimate moment speaks to a relaxed state of mind when the pressure is at its maximum. While her personal best stands at 6.29m, a 6.16m on a completely different surface in beach conditions is excellent.

Beating a seasoned teammate like Vu Thi Ngoc Ha, who jumped 5.81m early on, points toward a change of guard in Vietnamese athletics and cements Hang as a favourite for the SEA Games in 2027.

Arachchi was crestfallen yet satisfied with a personal best. The gold that was almost in her bag had vanished, but she took solace in the silver. “The conditions were tough,” she noted. “We didn’t have much competition experience on sand.”

Ultimately, the long jump provided the athletics program with an almost perfect start, proving that in the pits, it isn't over until the final jump.
