A symphony of stars and surprises at Sanya 2026 opening ceremony

Sanya, China, April 23, 2026: The locals call Sanya "Deer City"  - a place of legend. Standing at the Tianya Haijiao Ring Theater for the Opening Ceremony of the 6th Asian Beach Games, the venue felt less like a stadium and more like a stage for something unexpected.

As a young reporter, you often worry about the "who, what, and when." But last night, the "how" was all that mattered. How the saltwater breeze carried the rhythm of the drums. And despite all my research I was completely surprised.

The Surprise: Precision Like Poetry

The dances were so organized, so impossibly synchronized, that it felt like a single heartbeat expressed through a hundred bodies. Every movement landed exactly where it should. I found myself holding my breath, afraid that exhaling might break their spell.

The Flashback: When Memory Takes Flight

Then came the tumbling. It wasn't "real" gymnastics, no balance beams. But there were backflips. Back handsprings. And at that moment, I wasn't a reporter anymore. I was a girl again, on a mat, learning to trust my body to fly backward. The sound of hands hitting the floor brought me back to the chalk on my palms, the fear in my throat, the joy of finally landing it. I don't play anymore. But for a few seconds, I remembered exactly what it felt like trying.

The Highlight: "Connect the World"

The final chapter arrived like a wave. "Connect the World." The title sounded simple. But as the lights shifted, I understood this was about connecting moments the past me to the present me, the desert to the sea.

Later, at the press conference, Mr. Qiao Wei said something that stayed with me: "We also share a common ocean with the world." That line captured everything I had just felt that despite our differences, the same sea touches all our shores.

When the Jordanian athletes emerged, there was a personal rush of pride. Seeing familiar faces athletes I've interviewed back home reminded me why these Games matter.

Walking back to the media center, my shoes were clean and my notebook was full. But my heart felt light. What I will remember is this: a back handspring that took me back, a dance so organized it stole my breath, a quote about a common ocean, and a final chapter called "Connect the World" that connected me, unexpectedly, to myself.

The Games have begun.
