Aichi-Nagoya to honour Japan’s previous Asian Games host cities in torch lighting ceremony

Sanya, China, April 21, 2026: The organising committee of the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya this September and October will honour Japan’s two previous Asian Games host cities in the torch lighting ceremony.

As well as a ceremony in Aichi-Nagoya, there will be similar events in 1958 Asian Games host city Tokyo and in 1994 host Hiroshima. The torch relay will begin in August.

In a presentation to the OCA Executive Board meeting in Sanya on Tuesday, AINAGOC also reported that June 11 would mark the 100-day countdown with an event at the Nagoya Noh Theatre. On this day, the torch and uniforms will be unveiled and the event will include a traditional performance.

From June 11 to June 14, AINAGOC will project the messages of support and videos from ambassadors, and from June 11-21 there will be an exhibition of sports manga.

The 20th Asian Games will run from September 19 to October 4, and throughout the Games there will be “One Asia World” festivities in Hisaya-odori Park in the centre of the city.

The four key components of the festival will be a medalist celebration stage, a media satellite studio stage, sponsorship activation and hospitality zone.

There will also be a Champions Wall on LED screens in Nagoya, and at the other competition clusters Tokyo, Shizuoka, Gifu and Osaka.

Organisers also plan to invite all 45 National Olympic Committees to join in a tree-planting ceremony to mark sustainability.
