Main Media Centre opens for 2026 Asian Beach Games

Sanya, China, April 21, 2026: The stage is set, the sands are ready and the cameras have now officially started rolling.

With the opening of the Main Media Centre (MMC), Sanya has signalled to the world that it is ready to host the 2026 Asian Beach Games. It marks the final countdown to an event that promises to blend natural athleticism with the breathtaking beauty of Hainan Island.

The MMC, which entered trial operations on April 16, serves as the central nervous system for the Games. It integrates three vital functions into one efficient footprint:

*Main Press Centre (MPC), which houses the workspaces and conference halls for print and digital journalists

*International Broadcast Centre (IBC), which is the centre for live signal distribution

*Media hotel, an on-site accommodation designed to eliminate long commutes.

Faris Al-Kooheji, Chair of the OCA Media Committee, expressed high praise for the facility, noting its “smooth operations” and suggesting that its efficiency sets a new benchmark for future events, including the upcoming Asian Games in Nagoya and Aichi prefecture.

Sanya is pioneering a lean and sustainable hosting model. Rather than investing in permanent, high-cost structures, organizers have utilized integrated facilities along the Coconut Dream Corridor. This 22km stretch of beach serves as the primary arena for six of the eight venue clusters, ensuring the iconic Sanya coastline remains the star of the broadcast.

The commitment to the environment is further cemented by a zero-waste event initiative. Highlights include: A Clean Energy Fleet with over 1,000 official vehicles powered by renewable energy, eco-conscious infrastructure made up of temporary, modular setups that reduce the long-term environmental footprint.

This edition of the Games is particularly significant as the first major international sporting event since the Hainan Free Trade Port’s special customs operations took effect. 1,790 athletes from 45 National Olympic Committees. 14 sports (15 disciplines) offering 62 gold medals. Over 1,000 accredited media from China and abroad.

With the official opening ceremony slated for April 22 at the Tianya Haijiao Ring Theater, the city is already buzzing. From the “Yaya” mascot displays to the intricate sand sculptures at Haiyue Square, Sanya is ready to prove that the best way to compete is with the ocean as your spectator and witness.
