Colombo, Sri Lanka, May 12, 2020: Work on Sri Lanka’s first national sports university for athletes will commence in September 2020, according to a top government official.

Minister of Sport Dullas Alahapperuma announced that everything is ready for the construction of the island nation’s first sports university on 125 acres of land in Homagama on the outskirts of the capital Colombo.

Minister Alahapperuma said the facility for budding athletes was part of “the sports economy for the country as referred to in the Vision of Properity declared by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa”.

Alahapperuma said: “The concept is very important to focus on sports development and already a cabinet proposal has been made to start the construction work of this National Sports University.”

The Minister visited the site on May 5 accompanied by Higher Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena, Sports Ministry Secretary KDS Ruwanchandra and Sports University committee chairman Dr. Chandra Embuldeniya.

Dr Embuldeniya said a sports university is “a must” for any country aiming to keep abreast with present day demands in the field of professional sport with emphasis on training and research.
