Manila, Philippines, May 10, 2020: Asian Games 2018 weightlifting champion Hidilyn Diaz is certainly pulling her weight when it comes to helping the needy in her home country of the Philippines.
The Rio 2016 silver medallist, who is training in Malaysia, has been holding online weightlifting seminars and asking the participants to make a small donation to people in need due to the coronavirus lockdown.
“As of today, May 9, we have collected a total amount of P156,312.13 (3,100 USD),” she posted in her Facebook account.
“We successfully distributed the 50 food packages to 50 families in Zone 7b and Zone 9C in Zambowood, Zamboanga City. Next week we will deliver 60 food packages to 60 families in Mampang, Zamboanga City.
“For every 365 pesos/7.5 USD, you can help an affected family by surviving this pandemic for one week.
“I also want to thank God for giving me this opportunity to inspire and give hope to our Kababayan (countrymen) in Cavite, Zamboanga, Bulacan and Metro Manila and also for sending people who help us to make this happen. Thank you donors for helping us.”
Diaz, who is from Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines and is 29 years old, is aided by family and friends back home to buy, pack and distribute the food packages with the money raised from her weightlifting seminars.
