Astana, Kazakhstan, February 2, 2026: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, Gennadiy Golovkin, met with H.E. Antonello De Riu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Italian Republic, and Sara Meneghetti, Attache for Commercial and Cultural Affairs.
The meeting focused on prospects for bilateral cooperation in sport, education, sports science, technology and infrastructure, as well as potential joint projects in both the short term and long term.
“We see Italy as a reliable partner and believe there is a strong potential to deepen our cooperation through practical initiatives that strengthen Kazakhstan’s role with the Olympic Movement and contribute to wider international sports projects,” Golovkin said.
The Ambassador noted the dynamic development of Kazakhstan’s sports sector and emphasised that the Italian side is well aware of Kazakhstan’s progress in sports infrastructure and international initiatives, providing a solid base for further strengthening the partnership.
Particular attention was given to upcoming international events, including the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. The parties discussed the concept of an Italian corner – a themed public space for shared viewing of Kazakhstan athletes’ performances.
Work is currently underway to define the format, venue and operational details. The initiative is expected to support the national team and promote cultural exchange.
The NOC President thanked the Italian Embassy for its constructive support, including assistance with visa facilitation for athletes and delegations.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Ambassador confirmed Italy’s interest in continued cooperation, wished Kazakhstan success at the upcoming Games, and reiterated Italy’s commitment to expanding engagement with Kazakhstan.
